CHAPTER TEN

Wade watched Jeremy prepare dinner for the guys. Jason stood next to her shredding lettuce, and Dennis was stirring the chili. No one had realized that Jeremy was issuing orders and they were following them. Kevin was putting placemats on the table.

Peter sat down next to him on the family room sofa. “What are you going to do when we head out?”

“About?” Wade asked, pretending to be focused on the slice of lime in his beer.

“Don’t give me that shit, asshole. We’ve been friends too long. Jeremy. What are you going to do about her?”

“Say goodbye and head back to Virginia.”

“As simple as that?” Peter asked.

Of course it wasn’t that fucking simple. He wanted to stay here. With her. Explore what they could build together. But the timing was shitty. He’d found out at the end of the last year that he was finally in zone for Commander. Spring had come and gone and he knew the Board of Review had already sat down in the tank to make decisions. Any day he was hoping to get the call, praying that he didn’t get passed over. He’d made it to this point much earlier than average because of his singularly focused dedication to his career. And he knew his ability to influence the location of his next opportunity would weaken due to the more limited number of available Commander positions.

He looked over to where Jeremy was whipping Mark with the end of the dishtowel because he kept stealing nacho chips. His team loved her as much as he did. Wade rubbed his hand over his chest. Crap. He loved her already.

“No, it’s not as simple as that, but what else am I supposed to do about it.”

He was saved from further conversation by Jeremy calling out that dinner was finally ready.

The meal was a fun affair. Wade watched Jeremy carefully. Yes, she was laughing, and joking with the guys, but when the focus wasn’t on her, the mask slipped a little. Periodically, she’d rub her temples, a sure sign of stress. Or she’d take a really deep breath and let it go slowly, like she was fighting an internal battle. He needed to understand what was going on, and he had a feeling it had to do with that asshole who’d been bothering her. The idea of going back to Virginia knowing he was leaving her to deal with him on her own felt like dereliction of duty. It was his duty to protect her.

Once dinner was over, Jeremy started to collect dishes, but Kevin and Mark told her to sit while they took care of it. While everyone pitched in, Wade poured Jeremy another glass of wine and ushered her out onto the deck. “Here. Sit and relax for a few while we take care of the kitchen,” he said, before returning inside with his plan.

Wade pulled out his wallet and put a hundred dollar bill on the counter. “First couple of beers are on me as long as you get the fuck out of here and don’t come back before midnight.
